AI Mode cites google.com more than any other site. Whose card is it, and is it a loss?
Trackers count Google's own cards as google.com citations. Split them into your profile, a rival's card and a results page before calling it a loss.
- The studies disagree because they sample different queries. Local, travel and product queries carry the most google.com citations.
- A google.com citation can show your own profile, a rival's card or a Google results page. Trackers count all three the same way.
- Score each citation by whose entity it shows. Only rival cards and results pages you do not rank in are losses.
- Each type has a different fix. Business Profile, Merchant Center feed or ranking for the related query Google opens.
BrightEdge reported on 7 September 2026 that google.com took 44.9% of Google AI Mode citations in August, against 9.9% in AI Overviews. Most coverage of this and earlier studies reads it as Google keeping clicks for itself. That reading skips a step. A google.com citation is a container, and what sits inside it decides whether it costs you anything. Sometimes the card inside is your own.
Why do the studies disagree on how often AI Mode cites Google?
Four studies measured this in 2026. Their headline numbers look far apart.
| Study | Window | Sample | Finding |
|---|---|---|---|
| SE Ranking | Two weeks, February 2026 | 68,313 keywords, 20 niches, 1,321,398 citations | Google 17.42% of AI Mode citations |
| Profound | 15 April to 30 June 2026 | Over 32 million google.com/searchviewer instances | google.com share up 8.4x, now second behind YouTube |
| BrightEdge | January to August 2026, US | Consumer product and finance prompts, size not published | 44.9% in AI Mode, 9.9% in AI Overviews in August |
| BrightLocal | Published 26 August 2026 | 1,355 locations in the US, UK and Australia, 60,970 checks | Business Profiles 28.63% of all local citations across three engines |
Most of the gap is the query mix. SE Ranking's own niche split runs from 53.18% in travel and 48.74% in entertainment down to 6.48% in insurance and 5.13% in finance. Careers was the one niche where Google was not first, with Indeed cited three times as often. BrightLocal ran only local prompts and found a Business Profile cited for 94.17% of the businesses it checked. BrightEdge restricted its set to prompts that returned consistent answers, which could favour stable, structured results.
Timing matters too. SE Ranking's February data sits before Profound's spring rise. BrightEdge shows AI Mode at 35% in January, 48% in July and 44.9% in August, so the share was not a straight climb.
One comparison should be dropped. Coverage of SE Ranking said Google's self-citation had tripled since mid-2025. The earlier figure was a share of answers and the later one a share of citations. Those are different denominators.
None of the studies publish enough to settle the exact level. What they agree on is the pattern. Google cites itself most where it holds structured data: local businesses, travel, products and live figures such as prices and stock quotes.
What is a google.com citation, exactly?
It is one of three things.
- A Business Profile card. The citation opens a profile with hours, photos, location and reviews. SE Ranking put Business Profiles at 36.1% of Google's AI Mode citations in February. Profound found its spring growth came almost entirely from these cards and from product panels.
- A product panel or rich result module. For product queries this is a Product Knowledge Panel with specs and merchant options. BrightEdge's examples also include fare modules, local packs, rate tables and stock tickers.
- A Google results page. SE Ranking found 59% of Google's citations pointed to organic results shown in a mini results panel. A click can land on a Google results page for a related query, which may hold ads, Maps listings and hotels before any outside site.
Here is the detail that changes the reading. Search Engine Journal noted that trackers log these cards as google.com citations even when the card shows information about another business. A vendor's google.com share therefore mixes your profile, your rivals' profiles and Google's own results pages into one number.
When is a google.com citation a loss?
Score it by whose entity it shows.
| Citation type | What the user sees | Whose entity | Loss? | Lever |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Your Business Profile | Your hours, photos, reviews | Yours | No, but the click may stop at the card | Profile completeness and reviews |
| A rival's Business Profile | Their hours, photos, reviews | Theirs | Yes | Relevance and prominence of your own profile |
| Product panel listing you | Your product among merchant options | Shared | Partial | Merchant Center feed and attributes |
| Product panel without you | Other merchants | Theirs | Yes | Feed coverage and eligibility |
| Results page where you rank | Google results that include you | Shared | Partial, one more step | Classic ranking for that related query |
| Results page where you do not rank | Google results without you | Theirs | Yes | Ranking for the related query |
The open question is clicks. Search Engine Journal put it plainly: citation share shows what AI Mode links to, not where traffic goes. Google has not added click data to its AI reports, as Search Engine Roundtable noted after the 15 October link changes. So a card showing your profile is visibility, but its traffic value is unmeasured. Profound's author argues the card can act as your landing page. That is an interpretation, not a tested result.
The scope is also Google only. BrightLocal found ChatGPT barely cites Business Profiles and leans on Yelp instead. A strong profile helps in AI Mode and AI Overviews and does little for other engines.
How do you classify your own google.com citations?
Vendor dashboards report the aggregate. You need the split, and today that means checking by hand.
- Build a fixed prompt set. Use 30 to 50 questions buyers ask in your category, including local and comparison forms. Keep the list stable month to month.
- Run each prompt more than once. AI Mode answers vary between sessions, which is why BrightEdge kept only consistent prompts. Log a citation only if it repeats.
- Open every google.com citation. Record its type: Business Profile, product panel or results page.
- Record whose entity it shows. Yours, a named rival, or none.
- For results pages, note the query Google opens. Check whether you rank on that page. Moz found 88% of AI Mode citations do not rank in the organic results for the exact query, because AI Mode fans out to related searches. The related query is the one to win.
- Check for wrapped links. Since 26 August, Google has wrapped some organic result links in a google.com/goto redirect, according to DemandSphere. A tool that reads link destinations can then show your own organic link as google.com. DemandSphere does not say whether AI citations are affected, so verify by clicking through.
- Note model changes. In early September, Gemini 3.8 Flash in AI Mode showed few links until Google's Robby Stein said a fix was coming. A month with a model change is a weak baseline.
A worked example
Take a hypothetical dental clinic. Forty prompts produce 60 repeating citations. Twenty-four are google.com, which a tracker reports as a 40% Google self-capture rate.
Opened one by one, they split this way:
- 11 show the clinic's own Business Profile.
- 7 show rival clinics' profiles.
- 6 are results pages. The clinic ranks on 2 of them.
The clinic's own entity appears in 11 of 60 citations, about 18%, plus 2 shared results pages. Another 11 of 60 go elsewhere: 7 rival cards and 4 results pages without the clinic. The useful finding is not "Google takes 40%". It is that 7 rival cards beat this clinic's profile on its own prompts. Open those seven and compare categories, review counts and attributes against your own. That is a short, concrete list of work.
What moves each type?
Business Profiles. Google's local ranking help names three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. It asks for a verified profile, accurate hours, category and attributes, photos and replies to reviews. It also states there is "no way to request or pay for a better local ranking." BrightLocal's sector data shows how much rides on this. Profiles took 57% of citations for dentists and 59.2% for vets.
Product panels. Google's AI features guide says to keep Merchant Center and Business Profile information up to date, and says there are no extra technical requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode. BrightEdge goes further and recommends Product, Offer and Review markup. Both can be true. Markup does not make a page eligible for AI Mode, but it feeds the rich results that BrightEdge says AI Mode draws on. Merchant Center's AI performance insights, announced on 27 May as coming soon for the US, Canada, Australia, India and New Zealand, will report share of voice across AI Mode, AI Overviews and Gemini, with an attribute completeness score.
Results pages. This is classic search. Ahrefs found AI Mode and AI Overviews shared only 13.7% of cited URLs in its September 2025 sample, so track the two surfaces apart. Win the related queries AI Mode opens, not only your head term. Our audit of AI Mode's inline links covers the task queries where your own pages are the answer.
Where does this sit in digital authority?
A google.com citation of your own profile is a brand entity result. A results page you rank on is a search presence result. Both are pillars of digital authority, and both are cheaper to fix than coverage in third-party sources. The same logic applies to branded answers, where the sources behind your AI Overview decide what Google says about you.
The aggregate google.com share is a fact about Google. The split is a fact about you. If you want that split tracked across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI surfaces, the waitlist is open.
Questions
How often does Google AI Mode cite google.com?
It depends on the query set. BrightEdge measured 44.9% of AI Mode citations in August 2026 on US consumer product and finance prompts. SE Ranking found 17.42% across 20 niches in February 2026, from 53.18% in travel to 5.13% in finance. Local queries run higher still, mostly through Business Profiles.
Is a google.com citation in AI Mode bad for my brand?
Not always. Search Engine Journal noted that trackers log Business Profile cards as google.com even when the card shows another business. If the card is your own profile, AI Mode is showing your entity inside Google's interface. It is a loss when the card shows a rival or opens a results page where you do not rank.
How do I get my Business Profile cited in AI Mode?
Google gives no separate method. Its AI features guide says to keep Business Profile and Merchant Center information up to date. Its local ranking help names relevance, distance and prominence, and asks for a verified profile, complete hours, category and attributes, photos and replies to reviews.
Can I see google.com citations in Search Console?
No. Search Console reports AI Mode traffic under the Web search type and gives no click data in its AI reports. To see which google.com cards appear, run your prompts in AI Mode, open each google.com citation and log what it shows. Merchant Center AI performance insights will add share of voice for product brands.
