What is digital authority?
Digital authority is how much publications, search engines and AI engines trust a brand. It decides who gets recommended when a buyer asks a question. Here is how it is measured and why it now matters more than rankings.
- Digital authority is trust earned with the sources machines rely on, measured per buyer question, not per keyword.
- Five pillars: AI visibility 30%, press coverage 25%, search presence 15%, brand entity 15%, organic authority 15%.
- Press coverage in the sources AI engines already cite moves two pillars at once and is the fastest lever.
- Measure monthly across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews and compare the trend, not one reading.
Buyers used to type a query and scan ten blue links. Now they ask a question and get one answer. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews name two or three brands and move on. If you are not one of them, you are not in the conversation.
Which brands get named is not random. The engines lean on the same signal that journalists, search engines and buyers have always used: who else vouches for you. We call the sum of that trust digital authority. The rest of this post defines it; how the engines choose which brands to name covers the mechanics.
The five pillars
Ethos Engine measures digital authority as one score out of 100, built from five pillars. Each pillar is a question a machine asks about your brand.
| Pillar | Weight | The question it answers |
|---|---|---|
| AI visibility | 30% | When a buyer asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews your target questions, are you named, and in what position? |
| Press coverage | 25% | Do the publications that AI engines cite in your category mention you? |
| Search presence | 15% | Do you control page one of Google for your own name, and do you appear for the questions that matter? |
| Brand entity | 15% | Do your identity records (schema on your site, Wikidata, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile and others) exist and agree with each other? |
| Organic authority | 15% | How strong is your domain (domain authority, referring domains, ranking keywords, Core Web Vitals) next to your strongest competitor? |
AI visibility and press carry the most weight because they are the hardest to fake and the most predictive. Organic authority is measured from Moz, DataForSEO and Google PageSpeed data, so the score also reflects the links and rankings that AI engines lean on. A brand that is cited by trusted sources gets named by AI engines. A brand that is named by AI engines gets considered by buyers.
Why it replaced rankings as the number that matters
A ranking is a position on a page for one keyword. It tells you where you appeared, not whether anyone trusted you.
Digital authority is different in three ways:
- It is measured per question, not per keyword. Buyers ask full questions. "Best payroll software for restaurants?" is a different contest from "payroll software", and a smaller brand can win it.
- It is measured across engines. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews draw on different sources and give different answers. One reading from one engine is noise. Twenty questions across three engines, read and tallied, is a signal.
- It points at the fix. When the press pillar shows you are missing from 15 of the 20 sources AI engines cite in your category, the next step is obvious: get into those sources.
How a report reads it
A Digital Authority Report runs the four checks for one brand against three target questions the brand wants to win. The output is the score, the evidence behind each pillar, and a list of gaps with a placement that closes each one.
A typical result for a mid-sized B2B brand looks like this:
- Press coverage 22: mentioned in 5 of 20 trusted sources, 6 press mentions in 12 months, leading competitor at 31.
- AI visibility 37: named in 12 of 60 answers, usually third.
- Search presence 58: 7 of 10 page-one results for the brand name, page one for 5 of 20 questions.
- Brand entity 45: 4 of 8 identity checks pass.
The score is 38. The gap is clear: the brand is credible but under-cited. The fix is coverage in the sources that already shape the answers, which is what a high-authority placement is for.
What to do with the number
Treat the score the way you would treat a credit score. It is not the goal. It is a summary of behaviour that the people who matter can see.
- Below 40: machines have little to go on. Fix the entity records first (they are cheap, see the five-pillar checklist), then buy coverage in the top cited sources from the placement marketplace.
- 40 to 65: you are in the conversation for some questions. Pick the three questions you most want to win and concentrate coverage there.
- Above 65: you are the answer for your core questions. Protect it: keep coverage current, because AI engines favour recent sources.
Measure monthly. Compare the trend, not the reading.
Questions
Is digital authority the same as Domain Authority?
No. Domain Authority is a third-party estimate of how well a single website might rank, based mostly on links. Digital authority is wider. It covers how often trusted publications mention you, whether AI engines name you, how much of page one you control and whether your identity records agree.
Can a small brand have high digital authority?
Yes, inside a narrow category. Authority is relative to a question. A regional payroll provider can be the answer for "payroll software for restaurants in Texas" long before it is the answer for "payroll software".
How often should digital authority be measured?
Monthly is enough for most brands. AI answers change from run to run, so compare trends over several months rather than single readings.
What moves the score fastest?
Press coverage in the sources AI engines already cite. A single article in a publication that appears in the citations for your target questions changes two pillars at once: press coverage and AI visibility.
