TikTok search ads now pick keywords from your video. What should the video say?
TikTok's Smart+ search update builds keywords from the ad creative. What TikTok documents, what the video likely feeds it, and how to brief for search.
- Since October 2026, the ad creative is an input to TikTok's paid keyword set, not just the thing that runs after targeting.
- TikTok documents videos, images, text and metadata as inputs but never says speech or on-screen text. Treat both as likely and make all layers agree.
- Every creative is scored against every keyword on its own, so group creatives by search intent, not by campaign theme.
- TikTok's uplift figures for search are internal tests. Judge the change on your own search term report and conversions.
On 5 October 2026 TikTok moved its Search Ads Campaign onto Smart+. Most coverage treated it as a buying change. It is also a creative change. The system now reads your ads to decide which searches to enter. What the video says, shows and writes has become part of your targeting.
The creative now chooses some of your keywords
TikTok's help page for automated keywords is plain about the inputs. The system analyses your ad creatives, listed as videos, images, text and product information, together with the keywords you entered. From those it generates further searches to match. You need at least one manual keyword for expansion to start, and TikTok does not tell you when it adds a new term.
The default matters. Automated keywords are on by default for small and medium-sized business accounts and off by default for Key Accounts. Coverage of the October announcement from The Keyword confirms the same split.
There is a second route in. Automatic Search Placement, which TikTok launched in October 2023, takes in-feed ads and serves them against relevant searches. Its help page says it is on by default for newly created campaigns, and that delivery weighs relevance to the query, metadata, budget and competition. So an advertiser who never opened a search campaign may already be buying search. The same default-on pattern applies to the off-platform network, covered in our TikTok Ad Network piece.
Put together, the edit is no longer only what runs after targeting. It is one of the inputs to targeting.
What does TikTok actually read in a video?
Here the documentation stops. TikTok never says whether search reads the spoken words, the text on screen, or the auto captions. Its 2021 announcement of auto captions describes them as an accessibility feature that creators can edit, with no mention of search.
The top-ranking TikTok SEO guides fill the silence with certainty. Metricool's guide says TikTok transcribes what you say and even reads the file name. Winston Digital's playbook says text recognition reads overlays and the transcript is "the whole document". Neither links to anything from TikTok. They may be right. They are not evidence.
The best evidence comes from published research by TikTok's peers and its sister app:
| System | Who published it | Inputs named |
|---|---|---|
| Search ads relevance model, deployed | Kuaishou, Web Conference 2025 | Title, description, on-screen text (OCR), speech transcript (ASR), 3 sampled frames |
| Long-tail search reranker | Kuaishou, Web Conference 2026 | Title, description, OCR snippets, full ASR transcript, cover, 4 key frames |
| Multimodal search embedding | ByteDance Douyin Search team, August 2026 | 32 sampled frames; candidates may carry OCR text, captions and metadata |
Two details from the Kuaishou ads paper are useful for briefing. It builds a short keyword sequence from all text fields, weights each field, and a word that appears in several fields accumulates a higher score. The 2026 reranker paper frames relevance as checking whether title, transcript, on-screen text and frames agree on the same intent.
None of this proves how TikTok works. It does show what a modern short-video search system typically reads. The reasonable position is that speech and on-screen text are likely inputs on TikTok, and that agreement between layers helps rather than repetition in any one of them.
Each video is scored against each keyword
TikTok's search creative guidance says creative selection rests on the relationship between the query, the keyword and the creative. Each creative and each keyword in an ad group gets its own score, and the scores are not averaged across the group. Its optimisation page repeats the point: relevance is measured per keyword and creative pair.
This changes how to group work. A general brand video placed in an ad group with twenty specific keywords will be judged twenty times on its own merits. Strong scores elsewhere in the group do not lift it. Group creatives by the search intent they answer, the same way we suggest counting concepts rather than ads when sizing a test.
TikTok and agencies differ on reuse. TikTok's guidance says in-feed creative can be reused in search. Mintec, an agency, argues search creative should answer the query directly instead, though its supporting figures come from unnamed client accounts with no stated method. The scoring rule settles most of it. Reuse a feed ad when its opening already names or shows the problem a searcher typed. Brief a new cut when it does not.
How much of TikTok is search, really?
Enough to matter, not enough to rebuild everything around. TikTok's own data, from US users in June 2024, says 57% use search and 23% search within 30 seconds of opening the app.
Independent figures qualify that. Adobe Express surveyed 807 US consumers in January 2026. It found 49% had used TikTok as a search engine, up from 41% in 2024. In the same survey, only 4% of Gen Z said they would rely on TikTok over Google, down from 8%, and 89% of Gen Z preferred Google. Metricool's study of 2,314,756 TikTok posts from more than 92,000 accounts found the For You feed drove 72.7% of video views.
The two views fit together. Many people search on TikTok, but most viewing still comes from the feed. So search is a second job for the same video. Do not trade a strong feed opening for a keyword. Our 3-second hook analysis covers how to judge that opening. The goal is an opening that does both jobs.
Which TikTok figures can you lean on?
Every uplift figure TikTok publishes for search is an internal test with no sample size. Automated keywords drove about 10% incremental conversions at target cost per acquisition and raised the learning phase pass rate by 12%. Advertisers running search alongside in-feed ads saw 20% more conversions on average, from July 2024 data. The 2023 launch post said 70% of ad groups with search placement on performed more efficiently.
These may be accurate. They are also unverifiable, and they get distorted as they travel. One agency guide from September 2026 describes a single skincare brand with a 78% return on ad spend lift, 188% more new customers and 46% lower cost per acquisition. TikTok's own page attributes those three numbers to three different brands, StriVectin, Glossier and American Eagle, measuring three different things. Treat platform figures as a reason to test, and your search term report as the result.
A brief for a video that must work in feed and search
Write one search intent per video before anyone films. Then fill each layer with the same words.
| Layer | What goes in it | Evidence it is read |
|---|---|---|
| Ad title and description | The query phrase, plus up to five variants with Smart Multi Ad Text | Documented by TikTok |
| Manual keywords | 20 or more per ad group, one intent per group | Documented by TikTok |
| Spoken line in the opening | The searched problem in the searcher's words | Likely, from peer research |
| On-screen text in the opening | The same phrase, short and readable | Likely, from peer research |
| Visual proof | The product or result on screen early | Frames are an input in peer research |
| Carousel first image | Product plus the keyword as text | Documented by TikTok |
One detail on titles. With Spark Ads, only the first title is pushed to the organic post. The other variants run only in search delivery, so the first one has to read naturally on the profile.
How to check what your creative bought
- Open the Search Terms report every week. Automated keywords appear as one aggregated line, with a dropdown of the 10 highest-spending terms.
- Look for terms marked unknown. TikTok says these matched on general relevance without a specific keyword. A high share means the creative is pulling you somewhere you did not choose.
- Add off-topic queries as negatives. Exact-match negatives do not block plurals or misspellings, so add each variant.
- Move strong automated terms into your manual list, as TikTok's help page recommends.
- For organic posts, open Manage Keywords on the video. TikTok's in-app text says these keywords are added automatically based on popular searches. Creators can block or suggest terms, and TikTok reviews suggestions. It is the nearest thing to seeing what TikTok thinks a video is about, before you put spend behind it.
A hypothetical example. A meal-kit brand runs a video whose voiceover says "dinner in fifteen minutes" while the screen shows a chicken recipe. If the weekly report fills with free-recipe searches, the visuals are likely doing the matching. The fix is a recut where the spoken line, the overlay and the title all name the kit, then a set of negatives for recipe queries.

Questions
Does TikTok read the words spoken in an ad to decide which searches it shows for?
TikTok has not said. Its help page says automated keywords analyse videos, images, text and product information, without naming speech or on-screen text. Published research from Kuaishou and ByteDance's Douyin search team shows short-video search systems using speech transcripts, on-screen text and sampled frames, so it is likely but unconfirmed for TikTok.
Are automated keywords on by default in TikTok search campaigns?
For small and medium-sized businesses, yes. TikTok's help page says they are on by default for SMB accounts and off by default for Key Accounts. Separately, Automatic Search Placement, which puts in-feed ads into search results, is on by default for newly created campaigns.
Can I reuse my in-feed TikTok ads as search ads?
Yes. TikTok's own guidance says in-feed creative can be reused. Each creative is scored against each keyword separately, though, so a feed ad whose opening does not name or show the searched problem is likely to lose those auctions. Reuse the ones that already answer a query and brief new cuts for the rest.
How do I see which searches my TikTok ad was shown for?
Use the Search Terms report. Automated keywords appear as one aggregated line with a dropdown of the 10 highest-spending terms, and some matches show as unknown. Review it weekly, add off-topic queries as negatives and move strong terms into your manual keyword list.
