ChatGPT stopped citing Reddit. Should Reddit stay in your AI visibility plan?

Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations fell below 1% in August 2026. Four trackers reconciled, the engine-mix sum, and a keep, cut or re-scope table.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
  1. The trackers disagree on the size of the fall (73% to 98%) and agree on the level after it, which is under 1% of ChatGPT citations.
  2. It was one engine. Multiply ChatGPT's share of your Reddit-carried citations by the fall to get the real effect on your total.
  3. Reddit is still retrieved. Whether uncited threads shape the answer is unmeasured, so do not plan on it.
  4. Vendor-category questions lost Reddit citations. Community-knowledge questions still earn them.

For two years the standard advice for AI visibility included a line about Reddit. Get your brand discussed there, because the engines cite it. In mid-August 2026 one engine stopped. The headline number, an 86% fall, travelled fast. The decision it implies needs more than one number.

What happened on 8 and 14 August?

Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations fell in two steps. Promptwatch, which published the first data on 18 August, put Reddit at an average 3.83% of ChatGPT citations from 18 July to 7 August. On 8 August the share dropped to the mid 2% range. On 14 August it went below 1%. The average for 14 to 17 August was 0.52%, a relative fall of 86.4%.

Promptwatch did not disclose how many prompts sit behind those shares, and it said at the time that "a data-collection issue cannot be ruled out". That caution was reasonable on day four. It no longer applies, because four other trackers saw the same break on separate systems.

ChatGPT did not show fewer links. OtterlyAI measured total ChatGPT citations rising 3.5% across the same days. The links were moved to other sources. OpenAI has not commented in any report we read. Reddit told Axios the change has no meaningful impact on its business, because language models send it little traffic.

Why do the trackers say 73%, 86%, 92% and 98%?

They measured the same event with different baselines, units and brands.

TrackerBeforeAfterFallWhat differs
OtterlyAI497 citations a day (6 to 13 Aug)132 a day (14 to 17 Aug)73.4%Raw counts. Baseline includes the 8 August step. 16 US brand reports.
Promptwatch3.83% (18 Jul to 7 Aug)0.52% (14 to 17 Aug)86.4%Share of citations. Baseline ends before the first step.
Elmo4.67% (18 Jul to 7 Aug)0.38% (14 to 17 Aug)91.9%Share, own prompt set, consumer interface.
Qwairy, all brands2.04% (1 to 7 Aug)0.10% (14 to 18 Aug)95%Share. French and European brands, finance-heavy.
Qwairy, source categories3.9%0.08%98%A different cut inside the same study.

Three things move the percentage. The first is where the baseline ends. Otterly's starts on 6 August, so the first step is already inside its "before". Otterly says so and calls 73.4% a floor. The second is counts against share. Total citations rose, so share fell slightly more than counts. The third is brand mix. Qwairy's finance-heavy cohort lost nearly everything, with a median brand down 97.9%.

The level afterwards is where they agree. Every tracker that reports a share lands between 0.1% and 0.5% in mid-August. That is the figure to plan on, not any single percentage.

Did it last?

So far, yes. Promptwatch updated its analysis on 8 September and says the share has stayed below 1%. Surfer's data for 1 to 28 September, drawn from 47,213 prompts and about 5.73 million citations in the ChatGPT interface, has reddit.com at 0.74%.

That same table explains a confusing pair of headlines. Reddit is still the most-cited single domain in Surfer's set, with 42,623 citations. Both statements are true because ChatGPT spreads its citations thinly. The top 50 domains together take 8.4%. First place is worth less than one citation in a hundred.

Surfer's 0.74% and Promptwatch's 0.52% come from different prompt sets. They show a level that stayed low. They do not show a recovery.

Is ChatGPT still reading Reddit?

It still retrieves Reddit. Whether that matters is unknown.

Trackerly reports that Reddit made up 25% to 34% of the pages ChatGPT consulted on each day from 13 to 20 August, while its citation share sat near 0.5%. Trackerly does not disclose its sample. Suganthan Mohanadasan captured one conversation about live chat software in which the retrieval pool held 221 entries, 84 of them Reddit threads. None was cited. Every citation went to a vendor page.

Several commentators have turned this into a claim that Reddit now shapes answers invisibly. The evidence does not go that far. Trackerly says it cannot measure the influence, only that the pages are present. In the 84-thread capture the model saw titles and excerpts, not full threads. Retrieval is established. Influence is not. A plan that pays for Reddit activity on the theory that uncited threads steer ChatGPT is a plan built on something nobody has measured.

One more measurement point. Elmo found that the OpenAI API with web search cited Reddit at 0.42% before the change and 0.67% after, while the consumer interface fell from 4.67% to 0.38%. A tracker that queries the API never saw the old level and shows no drop. Check which surface your tool reads before you read its trend.

Which questions still earn a Reddit citation?

The same researcher captured a second conversation, about seller tips for the Whatnot marketplace. ChatGPT fetched 71 pages, 48 from Reddit, and gave Reddit 6 of its 8 citations. Its search was scoped to one subreddit by name.

Two conversations are not a rule, and the author says so. But they fit what the larger data sets show gained ground. In Otterly's reports, official brand and competitor pages rose in 10 of 15 and reference sources in 4 of 5. In Qwairy's data, institutional and government sources went from 17.1% of ChatGPT citations to 29.6%. Where a vendor page, a regulator or a reference source can answer the question, it now gets the credit. Where the practical knowledge lives only in a community, the community still does.

Reddit was not the only loser. News and media citations fell in 11 of the 12 Otterly reports where they appeared. Qwairy has press down from 3.6% to 0.6% and directories from 2.3% to 0.2%. A separate finance panel from Green Flag Digital, comparing October 2025 with September 2026, shows the same direction over a longer period: first-party pages went from 1.8% to 22.4% of citations among the 500 most-cited pages. That study covers US finance only and its filter favours banks.

How much of your AI visibility did this remove?

Less than the headline suggests, unless ChatGPT was your main source of Reddit-carried citations.

The sum is simple. For each engine, multiply its share of your Reddit-carried citations by that engine's change. Add the results.

Otterly's published figures let you check it. Before the change, ChatGPT supplied 497 of 2,614 daily Reddit citations across all engines, or 19%. The other engines supplied 81% and fell 0.6%.

0.19 x 73.4% + 0.81 x 0.6% = 14.4%

That matches the all-engine fall Otterly reported. An 86% headline became a 14% change in total.

Now a hypothetical brand, with invented numbers. It runs 40 buying questions five times each on ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity. That is 600 answers a month. Before August, 90 of those answers cited a Reddit thread that names the brand: 30 on ChatGPT, 35 on AI Overviews, 25 on Perplexity.

Apply an 86% fall to ChatGPT only. Thirty becomes about four. The total goes from 90 to 64, a fall of 29%. If the Reddit work takes 20 hours a month, the cost per Reddit-carried citation rises from 0.22 hours to 0.31. That is about 41% more expensive. It is not a collapse.

Change one assumption. If ChatGPT had supplied 70% of those citations, the same fall removes 60% of the total. That is the case where re-scoping is justified.

The decisions in this table are our working rule, not a published standard.

How do you check this on your own questions?

  1. List 20 to 40 questions your buyers ask. Tag each as vendor-category, comparison, or community knowledge.
  2. Run them in the consumer interface of each engine your buyers use, not through an API. For run counts, see how to measure AI visibility when the answers keep changing.
  3. For every answer, record whether your brand is named and every cited URL.
  4. Count Reddit-carried citations per engine: answers where a cited Reddit thread names you. Those counts are your weights.
  5. Run the sum. Use your own before and after if you have exports from before 8 August. If not, use the published ranges and report the result as a range.
  6. For each question where ChatGPT now cites a first-party or reference page, check whether your own page answers it directly. The August change also sent more searches straight to brand sites, which we covered in the ChatGPT site: operator audit.
  7. Save a dated export and set a review date. Elmo suggests looking again a quarter after the change, which is mid-November 2026. Reverse a decision only if Reddit's share on your own questions holds above its early-August level for a full month.

Where this leaves Reddit

Reddit is a place customers talk. That did not change in August. What changed is that one engine stopped treating it as a source worth crediting for commercial questions, and gave that credit to first-party pages, institutions and reference sources.

In digital authority terms, the lesson is about concentration. A plan that leaned on one source type in one engine lost most of that return in a week. Press coverage, brand entity records and your own answer pages are separate pillars because the engines keep changing which one they reward. If earned coverage in the publications engines cite is the gap in your plan, that is what the placement marketplace is for.

Questions

Did ChatGPT stop citing Reddit?

Mostly. Four trackers put the August 2026 fall between 73% and 98%, in two steps on 8 and 14 August. All of them place Reddit below 1% of ChatGPT citations afterwards. Surfer's September data has it at 0.74%, which is still more than any other single domain.

Does ChatGPT still read Reddit threads?

It still retrieves them. One tracker found Reddit was 25% to 34% of the pages ChatGPT consulted during the fall, and a browser capture found 84 Reddit entries in a pool of 221 with none cited. Nobody has measured whether those uncited threads change which brands the answer names.

Did Reddit citations fall in Google AI Overviews and Perplexity too?

Not in the same way. Otterly measured a 0.6% fall across Google, AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity combined. Qwairy saw AI Overviews up 2% and no clear drop in Perplexity. Google AI Mode is the exception. It declined gradually, by 30.5% in one data set and 44% in another.

Should a brand stop investing in Reddit?

Not on this evidence alone. Cut work that existed only to win ChatGPT citations on vendor-category questions, and anything that relies on seeded threads. Keep honest participation where customers already discuss your category, and keep measuring the engines that still cite Reddit.
